Booklet on Johnson Report

Sir, — I have just seen Richard Carson’s letter (March 27). The recommendation following the list of values on page 32 of .the Johnson Report merely asks that research be carried out into children’s values, not that thev should be taught. Because'the list ignores God entirely, it is very defective. “The fear of the Lord is the

beginning of wisdom” and this clearly distinguishes us from the humanist. He would subscribe to everything in the list on page 32. This ignores the supreme virtues of humility, which Jesus emphasised, self-denial and self-sacrifice, willingness to suffer for one’s beliefs, etc. The word “love” covers a variety of different meanings today and the Greeks found it necessary to use four words to express what they meant by it. Christians are" to love as Jesus loved; to exhibit divine, sacrificial love. — Yours, etc., C. W. HASKELL, Waikanae. March 30, 1979.
