High praise for Bryden
The former Makikihi colt, ißryden, was described by I his trainer, Merv Adams, as lone of the gamest horses he had trained after he had won the $lO,OOO Two-year-old Stakes at Harold Park Sydney, last Friday. Bryden, formerly trained by his owner, Clem Scott, was purchased about 10 weeks ago by Mrs C. Nelson, of Auckland, who sent him to be trained by Adams. The son of Lumber Dream and Beedeecee began smoothly, only to break soon after. He joined Tune Up with 20m to go and won by a head after pacing the mile in the slow time of 2min 8.55.
Bryden was an evenmoney favourite for the race after the scratching of Hanover Schell, which raced in Nev/ Zealand as Gazebo.
i Hanover Schell was •scratched after his connections believed he had been “got at.” However veterinary tests revealed that the horse almost certainly had a severe virus attack.
Hanover Schell, the early 2 to 1 on favourite for the race, became ill last Thursday night. The veterinary examination showed that he had a high white cell blood count, which pointed to a virus.
The colt will be spelled land probably brought back to Christchurch before returning to compete •in the Waratah Stakes at Harold Park during the winter. Hanover Schell gained four wins and a second from five starts in Australia. On February 12 he raced away from Bryden at the end of 1760 at Bankstown.
