D. Townley back in action soon
Spartan Prince will race in the interests of Sir William Stevenson, of Howick, at the Inter-Dominion Championship carnival at Adding.ton Raceway next month, and he will be prepared by his former trainer. Doody Townley, at Willowby. The East Tamaki trainer, jEric Running, went to i $46,000 to secure the five- ! year-old when he was auctioned at Addington Raceway on Saturday, the purchase being made on behalf .of Sir William Stevenson, : who has previously raced (only gallopers, by far the /best being Jandell. Sheralee, and Nipawin. Running left Spartan J Prince with Jack Smolensk!, 11 who had been looking after ■; him for the last month, following the auction, but I
yesterday arrangements were made for him to return to Townley. The changeover will take place in the next day or two.
Townley, who prepared Spartan Prince to win 17 races for the now disbanded Tom Tee syndicate, has not driven in a race since Boxing Day at Ashburton, the day on which the horse was removed from his care. “I’ll definitely drive him at Addington,” said Townley yesterday. “I’ve enjoyed my spell away from race driving and have been able to catch up with work about the farm.”
Townley said he would probably resume driving at trials before the Inter-Domi-nion meeting, but he has no plans to drive in any totalisator races before then.
