Sport with South Africa

Sir, — Could “The Press” ascertain for its readers what action is to be taken by the Commonwealth Secretariat, Mr Ordia’s organisation and the H.A.R.T. organisation, against Britain and Australia, for allowing certain of their golfers to take part in the golf tournament recently held in South Africa and reported in “The Press” just over a week ago? — Yours, etc.,

J. FLOWERS. December 13, 1978.

[Mr Trevor Richards, chairperson of H.A.R.T., replies: “H.A.R.T. has expressed concern to Australian and British authorities on several occasions about breaches of the Gleneagles Agreement by their nationals. The most recent example of this was earlier this month (December 19) when H.A.R.T. discussed the matter with the British High Commissioner. If your correspondent is concerned by breaches of the agreement, he/she should start by strongly rebuking the New Zealand Government, for it has the sloppiest and most divided approach to the questions of sporting contact with South Africa and adherence to the Gleneagles Agreement.”]
