Higher prices for oil

Sir, — To have made one’s economy completely dependent upon oil seems to be criminally insane.- To compound this by introducing the internal combustion engine into _ every gadget and vehicle it is possible to make seems to be beyond comprehension. To allow alternatives — imagine if we had developed an

efficient progressive railway system feeding every township in New Zealand powered by steam — to become obsolescent with reinstatement adding up to inflationary financial costs which make planners cling desperately to the oil consuming monster, all makes a mockery of planning which one suspects is virtually non - existant in New Zealand. New Zealand would appear to be governed by the kind of pragmatism and political expediency one associates with absentee landlords, Swiss bank accounts and colonial convenience. Until New Zealand establishes an independent economic mentality it can only suffer from the whims of the above. — Yours, etc., L. J. ROBINSON, Kaiapoi. /December 20, 1978.
