Swamp dig unearths artefacts

PA Hamilton The remains of what is believed to be a Maori parliament building are being excavated at Te Miro, near Morrinsville. About 15 people have begun a summer programme to open the large swamp site which is expected to uncover about 800 wetwood artefacts. The dig is being made by the Waikato Art seum. and the director (Mr Ken Gorbey) said the Ngati Haua people of the area believed the large structural pieces of timber found in the swamp lajt summer were part of the old parliament building demolished on the site in the 1890 s. The building had been dismantled and placed in the swamp for safe keeping. Last year a Te Miro farmer found the buried timbers as he was laying a drain. Mr Gorbey said the site was tested last summer and was shown to be worthy of excavation, but only a few small pieces of timber were taken from the area. The timber had been left where it waS until the art museum had the funds, facilities, and skills to start the excavation.
