No new Socred petition
PA Wellington Social Credit is not planning to launch another .etition calling for proportional representation in Parliament. However, it is prepared to support other groups wanting reform of the electoral system. The chairman of Social Credit's Fairer Representation in Parliament Committee (Mr E. Elliott) said it would be a mistake for the league to initiate another petition. “But we must keep the i boiling and be prepared to lend our weight to any non-partisan group that I am sure will come forward demanding a close look at the whole electoral system,” he said.
“It is up to some of the political scientists who
have been commenting rather harshly on the election result to act rather than just speak because they can see that democracy is in danger and unless they do something positive our efforts will be considered as just a political gimmick.”
In the General Election Social Credit received more than 250.000 votes but only one seat in Parliament.
