Freezing industry
Sir, — 1 suggest that S. Bennett, (November 27) is voicing the arrogance typical of so much of the farming community when she states: “Farmers are the only people the rest of the people in New Zealand cannot get along without.” The farmers produce the raw product which then has to be processed to a marketable state. Therefore, the farmers are just as reliant on the freezing industry and other related trades as we are on our farmers for our exports. To date, our primary produce is our main source of overseas funds, but with competition from E.E.C. countries becoming more fierce, all New Zealanders may have to face diversification in order to survive. Our image of our country as the world’s garden may have to change, to “paradise,” in order to attract more tourism, another major source of overseas funds, leaving both farmers and freezing workers looking for jobs as hotel porters and waiters. We are all an integral part of the system. — Yours, etc.,
(Mrs) J. M. PRATTLEY. 1 November 27, 1978. j
