Voting turnout
Sir, — When writing my article yesterday on voting turn-out in the last three General Elections 1 overlooked the fact the 18-year-olds were not eligible to vote in the .1972 General Election. The minimum voting age that, year was 20. The number eligible to vote according to the population estimates of the Department of Statistics was 1,756,500 not 1,860,400 as stated in my article. That percentage may be. compared with 71.8 per cent in 1975 and 74.6 per cent in 1978, The principal argument in the article — “a higher proportion of those eligible to vote went to the polls in this year’s General Election than in either of the previous two elections” — still stands. — Yours, etc., NORMAN MACBETH. . November 28, 1978.
