Swimming safety free

The Wharenui Swimming Club will not charge for admission to water-safety sessions each Saturday until December 9, in a bid to heighten water-safety consciousness.

Senior club members, including the New Zealand swimming and water-polo representatives Paul Rowe, Richard Clark, Melanie Jones, Rickie Binning, Michael Smith, and Tracey Turnbull will help the club’s senior coach, Clive Power, to control the sessions.

The programme will include water safety for preschool children, the use of lifejackets, resuscitation, floating and treading water, and water fitness. The club president (Mr D. W. Cain) said only one condition applied to families seeking free admission during the sessions, which would run between noon and 1 p.m.: mothers and fathers must attend with their children.
