Cyclists v. the rest
Sir, — I furiously cycle the first section ' which, being exceptionally narrow, makes me target practice; then a quick swerve to avoid the potholes that provide a daily bone shuddering if traffic banks up behind. A leisurely ride follows and the only danger is in becoming closely associated with juggernaughts undercarriages as they roar past. I would end up in the gorse fence if evasive action were taken. My bike is carried over the railway line for fear of losing it, the grime hiding me from the cars jockeying for grid positions at the lights. A check on the pollution meter shows that I am dead. So, sneaking home at lunchtime, I shower, discard my bike, and open the doors of my comfortable energy-con-suming vehicle from which I can emit poisonous fumes and haunt any other cyclist who dares to pedal down Annex Road. — Yours, etc., G. SMITH. October 18, 1978.
