Tax policies

Sir, — J. Rosier should have made more of an effort to get his own facts right before criticising the information contained in National’s tax pamphlet. The claim that Labour introduced tax rebates on home and farm ownership savings schemes is wrong. Labour promised to do so in their 1972 manifesto but broke that promise in Office. The National Government introduced these rebates in their 1976 Budget. J. Rosier claims tax rebates were lowered under Labour: Labour increased basic tax rates in their first Budget by remov-

ing the 10 per cent rebate introduced in National’s 1972

Budget. The pamphlet understates National’s achievements. Not mentioned are: The introduction of a tax rebate on rates, restoration of the right to deduct employ-ment-related expenses (severely curtailed by Labour), the abolition of stamp duty on first home and first farm purchases, and substantial,

reductions in estate and death duties. — Yours, etc., G. JOHNSTONE. October 19, 1978.
