Back-dating of superannuation

Sir, — When Mr Muldoon ' and his party were sturiiping the country with election promises in 1970, one or the major election platforms was. the promise of National Superannuation at 60 based on 80 per cent of the average . wage,: whatever that might be worked out at. As from October 1 the Government, in a generous mood before the 1978 elections paid to virtually all the Public Service a 9 per cent pay increase, backdated approximate one year. Such an increase paid to approximately 40 per cent of the New Zealand workforce who comprise the Public Service Sec-1 tor, would ■ represent a 3.6 addition to the average wage over, that period. Since National Superannuation is supposed to be adjusted half yearly according to the national average wage increase, I consider that the National Superannuation should half been adjusted and backdated at least over the last six-monthly period to bring it in line with the real wage paid as it would be affected by this huge back payment. Maybe National election promises are no more re-1 liable then those of other! parties after all. — Yours, etc.,
