Use of native timber
Sir, — Ths Canterbury Conservator of Forests (Mr J. W. Levy) has missed the
point of conservationists’ demands. We want to see no use of native timber where pine will do. Whether or not it is low-grade timber it still comes from the destruction of unique and disappearing forest, especially in the case of kahikatea. The Forest Service wood-use figures show that the industry is primarily geared to produce cheap wood. There is evidence that timber is downgraded so that it can be sold. The Forest Service would have us believe that the cheap timber is just leftovers from necessary uses. When the next wood-use survey is complete in mid--1979, will it be published or will it be, like last time, released and officially ignored "accidentally?” — Yours, GRAEME LOH. August 21, 1978.
