South Island promotion

Sir, — In April, 1977, you published in these columns my plea for the setting up of a national recovery council to combat what many people saw at that time as an accelerating deterioration in our economic affairs. It is heartening to see the recent constructive attempts by Canterbury union leaders and some employer representatives to save the South Island from becoming the Scotland of the Pacific. If the situation was serious early in 1977 it is surely desperate now. Wes Cameron is almost certainly correct in predicting that, whatever up-turn the economy may experience in the future, the South Island will not share fully in it without determined efforts made by all the interested parties now. “Fire Brigade” actions will not be enough; we should set up an organisation to coordinate all the necessary activities as a matter of urgency. — Yours, etc., " JACK CORNHILL. August 21, 1978.
