Road lanes

Sir, — I hear that the Waimairi County Council is going ahead with its plans to widen Fendalton Road from

the railway line to Clyde Road. This means that properties on eith r side of the road will have about 16 feet taken from the front of them so that a 16-foot median strip can be made in the middle. This seems silly to me. In Sydney, where there is more traffic, cars always travel correctly in lanes, two each way, and there are no median strips. If the centre of the road was flattened, the gutters made smaller and the footpaths cut in half there would be plenty of room for four lanes. This would be much cheaper too. Now that petrol is so dear and getting dearer, people will not be able to afford to run cars in a few years. Then more cycle tracks will be needed. — Yours, etc., RICHARD BARBER. July 26, 1978.
