Merivale Mall
Sir, — I write to express profound amazement at the convolutions of some business operations in the city. This year’s prize for the most ridiculous proposal, must surely go to the G.U.S. plan at Merivale. These “corporals” of industry must realise that many people in the community question thevalidity of putting up more shops in an area where they are already in over-supply. There are also some questions to be asked of the city planners. Have they, for instance, taken into account the effect of a vastly increased parking area? It is reasonable to assume that this will mean a corresponding increase in traffic flow. Since Papanui Road reaches saturation point at peak periods, do they expect to increase the flow along secondary streets and then, after a few months, start a widening programme with all its consequent destruction? Will G.U.S. pay for the street works? — Yours, etc., IVAN FINLAYSON. August 11, 1978.
