West Coast forests
Sir, — The Government plans for the West Coast forests are disastrous. Where are the forests for reserves and national parks? The compromise (“The Press,” August 9) was between the timber industry and the Forest Ser-
vice. The conservationists and the public did not get a look in. The plans to pay the millers compensation and to run the new beech industry at a loss confirms the widely suspected vie - / that the Forest Service has mismanaged the forests. Forests have been over-sold, some even sold twice. It is madness to entrust these people with the selection of reserves through an officials committee, as suggested by the Minister of Forests. A neutral body must choose the reserves that we are all paying for because of Forest Service mistakes. Instead of wasting the forests to maintain full employment, why not use this labour to plant a new beech forest on the vast areas of waste land the millers have left behind. —Yours, etc., JENSINA OLSEN. August 9, 1978.
