Bag thief resisted

An elderly Christchurch woman did not give up without a fight when a youth snatched her handbag at a Linwood bus stop yesterday. She struggled with her attacker for several seconds before falling to the footpath — still clutching the strap of the bag. The woman, a pensioner, was waiting with a companion at a bus stop at the intersection of Linwood Avenue and Keighleys Road when she was attacked about 3 p.m.

The youth ran off into the grounds of the nearby Linwood Crematorium. A motorist who had seen the struggle stopped and gave chase, but the attacker managed to escape. He had not been found by last evening, in spite of extensive patrols of the area bv the police using tracker dogs. The woman was not hurt in the incident. Her bag contained onlv a small amount of money.
