Arson suspected in P.O. fire
The police are treating as arson a fire at the Sockburn Post Office on Saturday. The blaze was started in a telephone booth at the Post Office, at 136 Main South Road, just before 5 p.m.
It caused minor damage to the booth and the foyer of the building.
No arrest had been made by last evening, but inquiries were continuing, said a spokesman for the Hornby police. The fire was attended by two engines from the Harewood and Sockbum stations.
Fire caused minor damage to a sauna room at the Olympus Sauna Lounge, at the intersection of Manchester and Tuam Street, yesterday morning.
Five units and two staff cars from the headquarters station were called to the fire, which broke out about 9.20 a.m. Firemen had to use breathing apparatus to enter the smoke-filled lounge, but the fire was quickly brought under control. Damage was confined to the sauna room and a wall of the lounge. Part of Worcester Street near Cathedral Square was cordoned off for an hour on Saturday morning after a gas leak was detected. The leak was traced to an old service pipe in the Cinerama Theatre. It was sealed without incident.
