Life of a teacher

Sir, — No wonder New Zealand is having economic problems. On Thursday night TV viewers were given a glimpse into the life of a schoolteacher. The interviewer dealt exclusively with the financial problems he faced and compared his plight with two teachers from overseas. The conclusion was, that an increase of 10 per cent in the teacher’s salary would solve his problems and restore his way of life. At no stage was there any reference to quality of life or the real things in life that matter. Not even job satisfaction was taken into consideration. The impression gained was that the only thing that mattered was money. If this is the only reward that people seek in their lives then we are heading for a very grim future. — Yours, etc., A. PFAHLERT. July 14, 1978.
