Whaling limits
Sir, — It is sad to watch the actions of the International Whaling Commission as it determines how many whales of each species are to be killed this year. The Eskimo delegation walked out even after the scientific committee recom-
mended a low quota for bowhead whales. Your report mentioned they killed 10 whales last spring. But I have reports which say that three times that number were struck but could not be landed. Weather conditions were bad or luck was against the whalers. The conservation-minded scien’ tists put the view that the bowhead whale is so rare that, like the blue whale, a pessimistic figure shows 3000 may be left in our oceans. It is sad that Japanese and Russian whalers fight so hard to ensure quotas are not reduced even when recommended by the scientific committee. New Zealand’s delegation appears too scared to support Panama in advocating a 10year moratorium on whaling. The greed we witness now may ensure whaling ceases soon, but I wonder if there will be any sei, minke, sperm or bowhead whales to protect. — Yours, etc., GRAEME MARTIN, Co-ordinator, Project Jonah, Christchurch.
