Boarder dies in fire
Wellington A 25-year-old man died after a tire in a boardinghouse at 7 Hutt Road, Lower Hutt, early on Saturday. He [was
Brian John Cutting, a driver.
1 Smoke from the fire, restricted to a small area of [the man’s bedroom, was noticed by a fellow boarder as he left the house at 7.10 |a-m.
He quickly traced it to the bedroQm. ft was full of smoke and Mr Cutting was unconscious on the floor.
He dragged Mr Cutting from the room, but the man was found to be dead on arrival at hospital. The police said the fire might have been caused by a cigarette. : Woman killed
A 59-year-old woman was killed in a head-on collision near Pukeura Bay, north of Wellington, early yesterday morning.
The driver of the other car involved, a 25-year-old man, is in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital. '
The police had not released their names last evening. Bridge crash A 22-year-old man, was killed on Saturday night when his car hit a bridge two miles north of Mataura on State highway 1. He was Warren John Phillips, a single man, of Gore. The car, in which Mr Phillips was the sole occupant, veered off the road and hit the bridge structure. Drowning A Dunedin man was killed when he fell into the harbour from the gangplank of the Korean ship Pearl River early yesterday morning. He was Gerald McDonald, aged 38, of Castle Street. A police spokesman said Mr McDonald was leaving the ship, berthed at Victoria Wharf, when he slipped and fell into the harbour. A lifebuoy was thrown to him, but when he was pulled out of the water the police were unable to revive him.
