New battle at Narita
Narita Left-wing protesters hurling petrol bombs yesterday tried to break into Tokyo’s new international airport, while thousands more anti-airport demonstrators held a rally nearby. Two trucks carrying about 15 red-helmeted radicals tried to burst through a gate at Narita Airport, opened on May 20. after years of opposition from environmentalists and local farmers. One of the trucks rammed a police armoured
.car and burst into flames. Four or five occupants were arrested, according to first reports from the police, but the others escaped in the second truck. The protesters sent up two ethered balloons at the southern end of Narita’s only runway, but the police said take-offs and landings had not been affected. The demonstrations were the biggest since the airport opened and the police said more incidents were expected. About 10,000 riot . police were on guard
aroun dthe airport as the protesters staged a skm march around it. Placards held by the marchers called for “unlimited gueirilla war” and “thorough destruction of the airport.” The protesters set fire to old car tyres and columns of black smoke arose over Narita. Six persons have been killed and more than 8500 injured in bitter clashes between police and the airport’s opponents since . plans for it were first announced 12 years ago.
