Bastion Point
Sir, — History is full of injustices, of which Bastion Point could be one; but before rushing to espouse the cause of the protesters we should reflect that most of what is now European land was filched, by force or more often guile, from the early Maoris. If reparation is to be the order of the day it is up to us to set an example by restoring Christchurch and its environs to the Ngai-tahu tribe. We would thus solve, at the stroke of a pen, all our problems of housing, drainage, transport and environment, and levy on 300,000 or so dispossessed pakehas appropriate retribution for the sins of their forbears. — Yours, etc.,
G. A. POLLOCK, June 10, 1978.
