Dog dosing
Sir, — According to a “Listener” article, the National Hydatids Council recently decided that urban dog owners who have demonstrated their co-operation in trying to eradicate hydatids may be excused from dosing their dogs. This exemption holds as long as the owner effectively controls the dog at all times by keeping it strictly fed and housed hygienically. Great, but the dog still has to have six-weekly dosing to move into rural areas. Another article in a suburban newspaper says that the Cabinet is considering exemption of seeing-eye dogs and police and customs dogs from movement controls because these dogs are generally controlled and strictly fed. The point I wish to make is that urban dogs excused from urban dosing should automatically be excused from rural movement controls. After all, there are responsible dog owners. — Yours, etc., GERARDINE RYAN. June 9, 1978.
