Contraceptive control wanted
PA Wellington The Society for Promotion of Community Standards has written to the Minister of Health (Mr Gill) inquiring if children under the age of 16 will be eligible to receive free contraceptives without the [parent’s knowledge or consent under the Government’s proposed free contraceptives handout. Clause 3 of the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act, 1977, removed parental authority by legalising the giving of contraceptives to any child under 16 by doctors and family planning clinic representatives, without the parent’s knowledge or consent, said the secretary of the society (Miss P. M. Bartlett). If the Government intended to give free contraceptives to those under the age of consent without their parents’ permission it clearly demonstrated its moral vacuum. “Free contraceptives to children under 16 open the door to child prostitution and experimentation,” said Miss
Bartlett'. The society called on the Government to amend the act so that no child under the age of 16 might be given contraceptives by doctors or family planning representatives without first obtaining the written consent of the parents, said Miss Bartlett.
