Dairy farmers want a rise 'in the basic milk-fat price for (the 1978-79 season, and have; j asked the Dairy Board for as I big an increase as possible, ; Federated Farmers’ dairy! section has told the board (that a minimum rise of 10j !per cent could be justified; under the Dairy Board Act. i .I This season’s basic price! was increased by 4.7 peri cent to 150.66 c a kilogram! at the farm gate in late Feb-! ruary. The increase was to halt a slide in dairy farmers' incomes and to help maintain confidence in the dairy industry. Masic milk-fat prices are set before the start of each dairy season. Dairy farmers can also receive an end-of-season bonus from a distribution of the board’s trading surplus. The board’s chairman, (Mr A. L. Friis) said last month that it was likely there would be a trading surplus distribution for the 1977-78 season. The board usually distributes up to 50 per cent of its trading surplus but dairy farmers this year want Government approval for a 75 (per cent distribution.
