Fatal crash over cliff
PA Auckland i Two men died when they: were thrown out of a vani which fell 25m down a cliff | at Orewa early on Saturday! evening. A third man survived the accident and was recover-; ing in Auckland Hospital yes- : terday. One of the men| killed was Thomas Allen, aged 50, a sickness beneficiary, of Browning Street, Grey Lynn. The police were still trying to identify the other dead man last night. The survivor, Wiki King, aged 19, of Browning Street, Grey Lynn, is in a satisfactory condition with leg injuries. The police said the van had | crossed the bridge north of!
Orewa and was travelling up the hill on the other side of the town about 7.30 p.m. when the driver lost control.
The back of the van struck the left bank and the vehicle shot across the road and over the side of the cliff. ■ The three men were (thrown out into a few inches lof water on the beach 25m 1 below. The men who died landed (face down, but Mr King fell lon his back.
The van plunged into the sand and rolled on the men who were killed, but it is believed they may have been suffocated or drowned rather than killed in the fall or by the van.
The police later found that the van had been taken unlawfully from Otara about nine days earlier.
