Bottleneck at airport
More than 4000 people were affected when low cloud closed Wellington Airport for most of the weekend.
The closing of the airport forced the cancellation of 10 flights, five each way. be-i tween Christchurch and Wellington. The cancellations left about 300 people stranded in Christchurch last evening. and| a special flight has beem scheduled for 5.50 a.m. to-| dav to help clear the back-, log.
An Air New Zealand spokesman said last evening that should Wellington Airport open today there would
; be enough seats on scheduled i flights to accommodate pas- ■ sengers whose flights had been cancelled, the Press Association reports. Wellington closed at 8.30 • a.m. on Saturday for the i whole day, and opened yesterday until midday only. | On Saturday 36 of 40 scheiduled flights in and out of Wellington were cancelled, (affecting about 1700 travellers. Yesterday 32 scheduled (flights were called off. forc- | ing about 2300 people to make alternative arrangements.
Throughout New Zealand 144 of 369 scheduled flight connections were cancelled
because of bad weather during the week-end. National league soccer in Wellington and Hamilton were affected by the closings.
Stop Out could not get to Hamilton for its match yesterday and on Saturday Trans Tours United could not get in to Wellington from Christchurch for its match against Columbus Waterside.
Eastern Suburbs arrived from Auckland yesterday on one of the few flights to land before the cloud came down. But after playing Wellington Diamond United, the team found it was stranded.
