Early start to duck shooting
Sir, — Our feathered friend, the duck, who, as a pedestrian on a busy road will bring traffic to a stand-
still and, when subjected to cruelty, horrifies society, is in for a shock. This Saturday he will be blasted into oblivion and will wonder if he has made a miscalculation. But being an intelligent bird, he has not. It is just that the Acclimatisation Society has decided that there are too many of his sort around this year and the gleeful duck shooter is permitted to be very unsportsmanlike and get his bag two weeks early. Ducks know that the season has always started on the first Saturday in May and many take refuge on various sanctuaries. Our sporting spirit is in a decline. — Yours, etc., JOANNA MOW AT. • April 11, 1978.
