The promotion of standards
Si.r, — W. D. McCullough seems to have missed the point in his criticism of the article published for the Society for the Promotion of Community Standards in “The Press” on April 4. It appears to me that the S.P.C.S. is not advocating ignorance on such subjects as homosexuality, > contraception, and abortion or trying to make them appear grubby. These issues demonstrate that our community is losing its ethical base, and many people are acting on impulse and not on specific values. Departing from values and allowing people to do as they please results in increasing crime, violence, venereal disease, drunken driving, marriage failure, and other disastrous consequences. The S.P.C.S. has taken a firm stand on these issues, and rightly so, for the understanding, love, and compassion which W. D. McCullough advocates can only become a reality when society has a firm moral base. — Yours etc., ROD THOMPSON. April 7, 1978.
