Indifference to fluoridation
Sir, — I have read a report of Mr J. A. D. Anderson, a member of the executive of the Christchurch Metropolitan Ratepayers’ Association, applauding the Christchurch City Council’s lack of interest in fluoridation. Mr Anderson said, “I cannot make out why dentists advocate fluoridation. They are doing them* selves out of a iob if it is any good.” Before fluoridation was brought into Papakura by a progressive council, out of every 10 children I examined under the age of 18. and at six-monthly intervals, nine required fillings. Since the effects of fluoridation have been felt I have to do fillings on one in 10 such patients. About the efficiency of fluoridation there is little doubt. People in fluoridated areas are now keeping their teeth instead of having extractions. The depressing figures in the W.H.O. survey in New Zealand, compiled from Canterbury’, showed - large proportion of the population either with dentures or large numbers of fillings. I can only urge Christchurch to get with it and fluoridate its water. —> Yours, etc., J. R. INNES (8.D.5.) Auckland, March 1, 1978.
