The "clapped out" fire appi--1 ance at Brooklands is the i sole responsibility of the (Waimairi County Council, (according to Christchurch’s deputy chief fire officer (Mr |G. Roberts). ( Last week the council sa:d iit was alarmed at the condition of the appliance—a (water tender—and wanted ( something done about it (soon. ( Mr Roberts said the appliance belonged to rhe council, (and had “nothing whatever (to do with the Fire Service.” | He said the Fire Service (engine used by the Brooklands Volunteer Fire Brigade (was in top-class mechanical ; condition.
“The fire engine at Brooklands is our responsibility, and it is fully maintained like all our other vehicles,” Mr Roberts said. Waimairi County Councillors had also questioned whether it was a local council’s responsibility to provide a fire appliance at all. Mr Roberts replied that in areas where there was no water reticulation, the responsibility for providing water for fire-fighting lay with local bodies.
“In fact, we are not responsible for the water supply in cities or any other area,” said Mr Roberts.
