Causes of crime

Sir, — I have just heard a broadcast by Arthur Lydiard on his return from Finland. He said how shocked he was at the way New Zealand society is heading. In Finland they are building more sports stadiums; here we are building more taverns and bottle stores. How right he is, and what shocking monuments they are to the increase of drunken driving, the breaking up of family life, and the general increase of alcoholism. Does anyone in authority make a positive move to combat this corrupting influence of alcohol? Of course they do not. That would be too anti-social; so let us build more taverns to keep the shareholders happy, and to Hell with the quality of life. On television, crime, rape, arson and violence are all on the increase. What does authority do to solve it? Nothing. More programmes depicting violence and crime give the mildly perverted individual an extra push. — Yours, etc., MICHAEL HUCKLESBY. November 8, 1977.
