Taxes on drugs
Sir, — Their memories jogged by Mr Hannen’s letter of November 6, 2000 Nelsonians who voted for my 1971 Nelson City Council “tax marijuana and lower the rates” campaign will be wondering now if Christchurch, whose hills are no less fertile and whose citizens’ respect for the noble weed runs no less deep, will carry on letting a valuable natural resource in international demand be exploited only by a shady association of high-profit criminals and, come legalisation. by a shady association of breweries and tobacco companies. Is there any councillor who does not see now that this is the last great untapped taxation resource of this century, failing Pegasus Bay off-shore oil, and that local bodies should claim it before Wellington does? — Yours, etc..
