Bridge title to India
Special correspondent Manila
The Far East bridge championships ended in Manila with a victory to India that was clearcut when there were still two matches to play. The minor placmgs seesawed when Thailand scored an 8-nil win over India and climbed to second on the ladder. Repeating its erratic form over the final stages, New Zealand lost to Japan, although the 3.9-4.1 score was very close to a draw.
The result kept New Zealand in eighth place. Final placings on the open ladder were:— India, 152.92, 1; Thailand, 133.22, 2; Taiwan. 130.47. 3; Australia 128.57, 4; Indonesia, 121.57, 5; Philippines 120.57 6; Japan. 114.29, 7; New Zealand, 11225, 8.
In a special report to ‘ The Press.” J. R. Wignail writes: "The Indian team’s bidding was bold, optimistic, sometimes primitive, but their card play was of such high standard that they will be hard to beat when they defend the title next year in New Delhi.
"The second place Philippines gained in the women’s championship has given them the right to represent the Far East in the women's world championship next June in New Orleans for the Venice Trophy.
"Australia and New Zealand will play off in March for the right to represent the South Pacific. Although only fifth in Manila, the New Zealand women will have an excellent chance. They were reduced to four players in Manila, but the experience and an additional pair make it certain that they will be much improved.”
