Imp has impressive race win

Imp, skippered by Alan Archer, took line honours comfortably in the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club’s 225 km race from Lyttelton to Timaru which finished last evening. The race started from Lyttelton at 10p.m. on Thursday and Imp finished 21 hours 48min later, 50min ahead of the next yacht, Sapphire (Richard Coop). After Sapphire came six yachts within 20min of each other, headed by Chantal (Don Dalton) which many observers had picked to win the race. The fleet of nine struck alternate dead and fresh patches around the peninsula. In the finishing stages there was a freshening north-easterly. Avanti, skippered by Jack Turnbull, seems the likely handicap winner but late last evening two yachts had yet to finish and one of these could yet take the race on handicap.
