Hacks
The judge of the saddle horses, Mr G. O. Hansen (Gisborne) was pleased with the quality of the entries in the park hack and hack section. Champion park hack was awarded to Miss Sandra Daley’s Desert Chief, which performed extremely well for three wins. He also won the Bethell Challenge Salver for the best paced and mannered hack of the show. Desert Chief and the large hack winner, Mrs E. W. White's Royal Whip, were asked to work separately and then together. Desert Chief was much more settled in his work and was a deserving winner.
Reserve champion park hack
was Miss Robin Ford’s Sir Galahad. The champion hack event resulted in a popular win for A. L. Dunn and Mrs Dunns Nightcall, ridden by their daughter. Gay. Reserve champion went to the beautifully mannered Annabasis, ridden by Mrs M. Letham.
Ponies
GROUP A Many ponies were above themselves'and would not work properly for their riders. Champion pony over 137.5 cm and not over 147.5 cm was won bv Mrs A. S. Sampson’s Sweet Charity, ridden by Tracy Mitchell. Reserve was Claire Mahoney’s Fascination; Claire won the Intermediate Hydra Cup for the second successive year. GROUP B The champion pony over 127 cm and not over 137.5 cm, Miss B. Jenkins's Kimberley, ridden by Miss A. Connelly, was an exceptionally good pony, according to the judge, Mr I. D. McDuie (Sydney). Although all classes had good types, the manners of some ponies could have been a little better, said Mr McDuie. Kimberley was later awarded supreme champion pony when the three champions were judged by the three judges. Reserve Champion > ny went to Wakeman and Ellen’s Dusky, ridden by Nicola Wakeman. This pony was Christchurch supreme champion in 1975 and 1976. GROUP C Schnell and Norgate’s Brighteyes won the pony championship not over 127cms, repeating the family record of the 1972 Royal Show at Christchurch when Heard and Schnell’s Midnight won the same award. Reserve champion was awarded to Archdale and Nichol’s Fleur, ridden by Nicola Archdale. Fleur was placed second to Brighteyes in her height class.
