Tom’s Mate fails

NZPA Melbourne Tom’s Mate failed miserably in his effort to win the §15,000 Werribee Cup (2100 m at Werribee yesterday and finished near the tail of the 15-horse field. The race was won by Inceptor in a track record time of 2min 7.7 sec. Inceptor (6 to 1 ) won by a length from the Melbourne Cup contender, Hyperno (10 to 1), with Ruthless Lover i 9 to 1) a head away, third. El Katrina was fourth. Tom’s Mate needed to win the race to earn a penalty which would lift him into contention for a spot in the 24-horse field for next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup. David Peake held the seven-year-old gelding, the 3 to 1 favourite, in a handy position for much of the running, but was forced to run him three wide. Tom's Mate was unable to run on and along with Peteken faded in the dash to the post.
