RING IN SUSPECTED
NZPA-Reuter New York The New York Horse Racing Association is investigating whether a 57 to 1 Uruguayan outsider was the real winner of a race at Belmont race track last month or whether a “ringer” had been substituted.
One punter collected $75,000 on the race, won by the outsider, named Lebon.
Racing fans in Uruguay claimed later that from newspaper pictures the winner looked like a much faster Uruguayan horse This horse. imported with Lebon, had been reported destroyed after being injured, officials said.
The New York Racing Association has impounded evidence for its investigation, including video tapes of the race and photograps of the horses involved.
