Starlifter returns
A United States Air Force: Starlifter aircraft returned to Christchurch Airport min-) utes after take-off yesterday; morning, when a cockpit) windshield cracked. This incident was described as minor, however, and an emergency was not called. The aircraft landed without difficulty.
It is believed the fault occurred when a heating element in the glass overheated, causing the outer layer of the laminated windscreen to crack. The Australia-bound jet had 11 persons on board.
