Antarctic flights to begin
More than 140 Americans .have arrived in Christchurch lon their way to break the [winter-long isolation of McMurdo Station, in the Antarctic.
They are part of the United States National Science Foundation’s winter fly-in programme, designed to prepare the station for the coming summer. The 142 men landed at Christchurch on Sunday, aboard a chartered commercial jet. During the next few days they will be flown south in advance of the influx of summer staff, which will begin in October. Six 17-hour round-trip flights will transfer the men and their equipment in skiequipped Hercules aircraft. Once there they will begin to prepare the Williams Field runway for the larger Starlifter aircraft, which do not carry skis. Others engaged in the programme will open buildings, and generally make the base habitable.
