Trade problems ‘not linked'

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo. The Japanese Foreign Ministry has reiterated that fishing rights for Japanese vessels in New Zealand’s 200-mile economic zone should not be linked with access to the Japanese market for New Zealand farm and forest products. “I can only repeat what I have said before, and that is we realise the existence of problems in our relations with New Zealand, one of which is related to fishing problems and another which is related to exports to Japan of New Zealand agricultural products,” a Ministry spokesman said. “We are making efforts to find acceptable solutions. but what we are not

trying to do is to link the two questions, which we believe are of a different nature and should be dealt with independently of each other.”

He was commenting at a regular press briefing on a speech earlier this week by the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys) dealing with New Zealand’s desire for reasonable access for its primary products to the Japanese market.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said that there was no question of the Japanese Government neglecting the situation.

“We believe we are paying sufficient attention to these problems and making efforts to solve them,” he stated.
