Shoppers’ boycott

Sir, — It was with considerable concern that I heard about the recent sacking of chocolate biscuit makers in Wellington. The housewives’ boycott is obviously having a dramatic effect and I expect that the coffee grinders and the fruit canners will shortly be similarly affected. If the boycott continues, I can visualise the New Zealand economy staggering to the brink of bankruptcy and thousands of unemployed trudging the streets. As a dedicated social reformer I shall be doing my best to help these unfortunate workers. In spite of the personal hardship involved. I am determined to eat chocolate biscuits for breakfast.

lunch and tea; to consume large quantities of canned peaches whenever the chance arises and to substitute coffee for milk or water on every possible occasion. If no further redundancies are forthcoming I shall have the immense satisfaction of knowing that it was largely due to my own efforts. — Yours, etc., MICHAEL BALL. May 20, 1977.
