Tussock workers
Sir,—The improvements made recently in the amenities for migrant tussock workers would not have been necessary if w’hat so-called “outside pressure groups” and Fijians at the camps said was untrue. In attempting to remedy a bad situation the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board has switched from Fijian to Tongan workers leaving the impression that they will switch to some other group if the Tongans complain a{»ut coni
ditions. The board has also made some improvements in conditions and decided to employ a public relations agent. The board should not exploit the fact that some people from the Pacific Islands are desperately in need and will leave their wives and families to spend the winter in harsh conditions. All that is needed is fair treatment by the board and unprejudiced acceptance by the local community. If this is present what need is there for a public relations agent?—Yours, etc., JOY McLEOD.
