Domestic purposes benefit

Sir, —To do as the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Walker) suggests, and reduce the domestic purposes benefit would be a disastrous step backwards. Mr Walker suggests the present benefit is so attractive that it encourages women to leave their husbands. He is probablv right. Women can now afford to leave their husbands. If, as Mr Walker suggests, they are forsaking home and husband for money, the relationships could not have been worth salvaging. Money is not enough to entice anybody away from a fulfilling relationship. If we accept any reduction in the domestic purposes benefit it would mean that once again women would have no choice but to stay with their husbands and put up with being beaten, ridiculed, ignored and exploited.—Yours, etc., GLENYS LAUGHLIN. May 20. 1977.
