Councillor unbowed

PA Invercargill Invercargill’s youngest city councillor, Mr Neil Boniface, will not attend a buffet luncheon for the Queen on Wednesday, because he refuses to accept the formalities that go with it.

“Don’t get me wrong— I’ve got nothing against the Queen,” he said yesterday. However, after learning of the formal procedures required of him and Mrs Boniface, Cr Boniface has sent his apology to his

Mayor (Mr F. R. Miller). Cr Boniface, who is 23, made his decision when he learned of some requirements which would be necessary for the occasion —and with which he did not feel prepared to comply. “I don’t want to make a fuss about it,” he said y esterday when approached for his reasons against attending. “We said we were going, but the requirements are against our principles.”

These requirements included Mrs Boniface’s having to wear a hat, and curtsey upon introduction to the Royal guests, while Cr Boniface would be required to make a head bow. It was only formalities such as these that Cr and Mrs Boniface w'ere unwilling to follow on principle. Cr Boniface said he would refuse to accept such procedures with anyone. “We’ve sent the Mayor our apology, and that’s that,” he said.
