Arrested black dies in S.A.

NZPA-Reuter Durban! Another black man detained under South African security laws has died, the police have announced in Durban. The announcement came one day after the Justice Minister (Mr James Kruger) had. refused demands for a judicial inquiry into the death of 16 blacks in police detention during the past year. (Journalists say that the toll is 18). The latest detainee to die was identified as Mr Samuel Malinga. aged 45. who was arrested in Soweto township, Johannesburg, on January 31. The police said that Mr Malinga had complained of heart trouble before being taken to nearbv Pietermaritzburg for questioning. He died in hospital on Tuesday. The other deaths have been blamed bv the police on accidents or suicides and have usually occurred in police stations. Refusing an inquiry, Mr Kruger repeated his assertion that black prisoners had committed suicide on orders from the banned Communist Partv rather than face questioning.
