N.Z. golfer hits 73
PA Sydney The young Wellington professional golfer, Richard Coombes, is the best placed New Zealander after shooting a round of 73 on the first day of the N.S.W. open at the Royal Sydney course yesterday. Coombes, who is 23, trails the tournament leaders, Ted Ball, and Jack Newton, by six strokes after they fired in a blistering round of 67 to clip a stroke off the previous course record set of 68 by the South African, Gary Player, in 1969. An American, Jim Ahern, heads a group of six players two strokes behind the leaders after finishing with rounds of 69.
